Library Assistant
Library and Research Center

Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Library & Research Center, the Library Assistant will assist in all aspects of library operations. Under supervision, the Library Assistant performs duties requiring a basic knowledge of library practices and procedures. The Library Assistant will work within established guidelines in arriving at solutions and exercise judgment in determining the applicability of guidelines to specific problems. Work is subject to review when problems involve making decisions outside the limits established by the guidelines.

Responsibilities include:

  • Answering inquiries over the phone, by email, and via snail mail
  • Providing reference for museum staff and outside researchers when appropriate
  • Copy-cataloging or cataloging of new materials based on experience
  • Serials check-in
  • Labeling, circulation, and shelving books and other library material
  • Oversees reading room
  • Processes and files material for the Archives of Women Artists
  • Scanning, copying, and digitization of materials
  • Database entry in Clara: Database of Women Artists
  • Receiving and processing incoming and outgoing mail
  • Assisting Curatorial Department with Book Arts Fellows program
  • Basic accounting for library purchases
  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications
The successful candidate must possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Women Studies, or related fields
  • A minimum of two years (full-time or equivalent) experience working in a library
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 20 lbs
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail
  • Receptive to feedback and willingness to learn new skills

Highly desirable:

  • Enrollment in an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science Program
  • Copy-cataloging or cataloging experience
  • Experience in multiple library departments
  • Desiring continuous improvement and enhancement of library skills
  • Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language
