Library Technician (Technical Services)
The National Gallery of Art Library is seeking applicants for a student assistant position in the Technical Services Department. This position is a key member of the acquisitions and cataloging team, providing a variety of support. The library collects research materials in print and electronic formats in subject areas that support the Gallery’s exhibition programs and projects of the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. Artists’ monographs have broad representation. Vertical file material is also collected for artists, institutions, and subjects. Rare collections and special formats include a wide range from manuscripts and early printed books to annotated catalogs, festival and emblem books, manuals on technique and materials, artists’ books, and fine press books.
Duties include unpacking and receiving newly acquired library materials from library vendors around the world, performing bibliographic searching, recording cataloging information, producing labels, and adding item-level information for cataloged titles.
Applicants should be familiar with basic library functional areas and be able to recognize and transcribe detailed descriptive information accurately and a desire to work as part of a team as well as independently. Familiarity with bibliographic and subject vocabulary in French, German, Italian, or Spanish is a plus.
In order to qualify for this position, applicants must be registered at least as a half-time student and be able to provide certification of student status, including a current class schedule. Work schedules will be determined to accommodate the student’s class schedule and the Library’s work requirements. The position is limited to 20 hours per week while classes are in session; full-time employment is available during semester and summer breaks. The incumbent earns sick and annual leave based on the amount of hours worked.
The position provides many opportunities for student assistants to learn about all of the functions of an art research library, as well as activities and roles throughout the museum. The National Gallery of art serves the nation by welcoming all people to explore and experience art, creativity, and our shared humanity.
