The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Assistant Archivist in the growing Library, Archives and Special Collections Department. The Assistant Archivist is responsible for the accessioning of incoming and existing archival collections, including creating inventories, managing location information, and completing state records management requirements. The Assistant Archivist assists the Senior Archivist with the arrangement and description of collections at varying levels (collection, file, item, etc.) in accordance with the museum’s metadata and description standards. This individual follows VMFA’s handling protocols to ensure the preservation of the collections, and assists with research requests from archival collections as needed. In addition, the Assistant Archivist works collaboratively with all museum staff on records management needs.
This is a non-exempt position without benefits, scheduled to work about 28 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30).
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in organizing and cataloging archival collections in a library or archives environment, or equivalent records management experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks with little onsite supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- ALA accredited master’s degree in library and information science, or equivalent education and/or training.
- Possess knowledge of professional archival standards, principles, concepts, and practice, and understanding of and ability to apply descriptive metadata standards (DACS, EAD, AAT, etc.).
- Experience with ArchivesSpace or other archival Collections Management Systems.
Special Requirements
- Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
- All staff, volunteers, and contractors are required to wear masks for all indoor and outdoor events.
- While outside on campus grounds, all VMFA employees must wear masks when a social distance of six (6) feet cannot be maintained.
