Chapter meetings:

SPRING
Saturday, March 26, 2011
Minneapolis, Minnesota
ARLIS/Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia Chapter
VRA + ARLIS/NA 2011 Joint Conference
28 attendees

This meeting embodied the spirit of collaboration garnered during the joint ARLIS + VRA conference. A joint meeting with VRA Mid-Atlantic at George Mason University was discussed for the summer. There was a lot of excitement over the announcement of the 2014 ARLIS/NA conference in Washington and a proposal for making it a third joint conference with VRA was proposed.

SUMMER
Friday, July 29, 2011
ARLIS/Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia Chapter
VRA Mid Atlantic Chapter
George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia
Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (CHNM)

This meeting was the result of past discussions among the membership regarding professional development opportunities. We spent the day learning about CHNM developed technologies and participating in “play dates” that provided hands on tutorials in Omeka, a platform for creating online exhibits, and Zotero, a powerful tool for creating and organizing bibliographies. We also had our first conference planning meeting where members could discuss the 2014 event and present ideas for hotels, programming, themes and tours.

FALL
Friday, October 28, 2011
Smithsonian Libraries, Washington, DC

Doug Litts organized a great program for us at the Smithsonian Libraries. In the morning we learned about digital initiatives at SIL, including blogs, twitter, Facebook, and ebooks. In the afternoon we were hosted at the Freer Sackler Library, where we received tours from librarians Katherine Phillips and Yue Shu, and archivist David Hooge. To encourage student involvement, the chapter offered a $20 disbursement to students to defray travel and meal costs.

Activities of the Chapter:

The most exciting development of the past year was the acceptance of the chapter’s bid to host the 2014 ARLIS/NA conference in Washington DC. A majority of members voted to submit the bid and the announcement was made at the 2011 Conference. Anne Simmons and Kathy Woodrell will serve as Local Arrangements Co-Chairs and Roger Lawson and Megan Halsband will serve as Programming Co-Chairs. We have several volunteers among the chapter membership to serve on the local planning committee. The Co-Chairs have had several meetings, including visits to Washington hotels that informed their recommendations to the board.

The Chapter migrated its listserv from the University of Maryland to ARLIS/NA’s Lsoft license. This was important as we had no current members at University of Maryland to monitor the list. ARLIS/D.C.- Md.-Va. now has a flickr account, maintained and updated by Web Manager, Emily Hunter at http://www.flickr.com/photos/arlisdmv/

The end of the year brought an exciting three way race for the Chapter’s Vice-Chair, with Heather Slania and Shalimar White on the runoff ballot. In the past, the position was filled mostly by volunteers, with the election ballot having a single name. I’m hoping this year’s election signals a new interest and excitement among the membership in the chapters growth and activities.
