ARLIS DC-MD-VA Chapter meeting at George Mason University’s Center for History and New Media (CHNM)
1. Approval of meeting minutes. Minutes from the Spring 2011 meeting, held March 26, 2011 in Minneapolis were circulated and approved.
2. Report from the Chair. Anne Simmons reported that planning for the 2014 ARLIS/NA conference in Washington D.C. is in very early stages. She has been in contact with Laurel Bliss, chapter liaison, regarding developments such as appointments of conference chairs and the possibility of a joint conference with VRA. As of late July, it appeared that the Executive Board was disinclined to plan another joint conference for 2014 due to time constraints. The official letter acknowledging D.C. as the location of the next conference was shared with the members in attendance.
3. Treasurer’s report. Megan Halsband reported little change in finances since last our meeting in Minneapolis. The chapter issued a check to ARLIS Lsoft for listserv services that has not yet been cashed (check written April 25).
4. Web and Communication’s report. Regarding our impending Lsoft listserv services, Roger Lawson reported that Anne had been in touch with our liaison and it sounds like we’re still not making much progress in migrating our listserv. We do have a new sponsor at our current listserv host, University of Maryland, replacing Kim Detterbeck. The price changed for the new listserv services, which is a group deal, because one user dropped out. Roger also solicited blog content from chapter members.
Emily Hunter circulated reports from Google Analytics that illustrated traffic for the chapter blog/website. Longer member-contributed posts are getting good readership as well as job postings. In fact, job postings are moving traffic to the site. She proposed making more of our job activities public on the blog. She has also opened a Flickr account for the chapter where she is posting pictures she takes at chapter activities. She also made a chapter pool for sharing photos. Chapter members can upload photos to Flickr that can be used to illustrate blog posts.
5. Additional Chapter Business, Discussion, and Announcements. Suggestions were gathered for possible location for fall 2011 meeting place. No attendees volunteered their institutions, so suggested locations will be considered and contacted. (Suggestions included: Folger, LC, Dumbarton Oaks, Chrysler Museum, Washington County Museum of Art , Culpepper Packer Campus for AV preservation, behind-the-scenes storage facilities in Suitland, Freer/Sackler, Pope-Leighey House, Johns Hopkins, UVA Scholar’s Lab, MITH, Copyright Center at UMD, also UMD new performing arts center Clarice Smith with performing arts library and archive.) It is acknowledged that all meetings until 2014 will include sessions of conference planning.
Yuki Hibben asked about the ARLIS/NA LibGuides account that was discussed at the conference. Fashion and Textiles SIG made a LibGuide for librarians at conference and it has been popular. The annual fee for LibGuides was discussed. It’s an easy to use tool for creating pathfinders. At the recent conference (?), it was proposed that ARLIS/NA could create one for our profession. Concerns include: can’t we just do this on free tools?, who will maintain? It would be used by other special interest groups, workshops, divisions, etc. Doug Litts says ARLIS Education committee had a webinar about LibGuides about a year ago.
