Our day will include a curator-led tour of the current exhibition Very Like a Whale, and a tour of the library’s national landmark building. We will also spend time with conservators and digital imaging specialists. Our day will conclude with our chapter business meeting and 2014 conference planning.

Summer 2012 Meeting

Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio-Visual Conservation
August 3, 2012, 10:00 am – 4:45 pm

We are happy to announce an exciting day at the Packard Campus for the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia. We will begin with an in-depth tour of the campus, followed by lunch, a session on film preservation with the Moving Image Section, and finally our chapter meeting and 2014 ARLIS/NA conference planning. And for movie buffs, you are welcome to reserve a spot (through the Packard Campus website) for the Friday evening National Film Registry movie screening in their state-of-the-art theater. Attendance for this meeting must be capped at 20.

The Center for History and New Media (CHNM) is devoted to the preservation and presentation of history through new technology. In addition to a tour of the Center, our visit will include hands on time with your choice of two CHNM developed tools: Omeka, a platform for creating online exhibits, and Zotero, a powerful tool for creating and organizing bibliographies.

VRA + ARLIS/NA 2011 Joint Conference

The meeting provided a wonderful opportunity for chapter members to see local friends at a busy national conference. During the hour, we met jointly with our VRA counterparts, then separately to tackle chapter-specific business.

In addition to a number of exciting agenda items, we addressed the proposed 2014 ARLIS/NA conference in Washington D.C.

Fall 2010 Meeting

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), Richmond

The VMFA opened its renovated spaces this May after a major expansion that added 165,000 square feet and reshaped the look and feel of the entire museum. The expansion doubled the VMFA’s space for major traveling exhibitions and dramatically increased its space for permanent exhibitions. New features include a sophisticated granite entrance, a stunning 3 story glass atrium, and a beautiful new library: the Margaret R. and Robert M. Freeman Library.The VMFA and its new library is a must-see for our chapter members and this meeting will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about the VMFA directly from its curators and our chapter colleagues. Our gracious hosts, Suzanne Freeman and Lee Viverette, have arranged for three of the VMFA’s distinguished curators to lead our members on tours of their permanent collections.

10:00-12:00 – Museum Highlights tour and curatorial gallery talks in Deco Arts (Barry Shifman), American (Dr. Elizabeth O’Leary) & Asian (Dr. John Henry Rice)

1:30-2:30 – Tour of The Margaret R. and Robert M. Freeman Library
2:30-3:45 – Chapter Business Meeting, Founder’s Conference Room
